The food delivery industry is currently undergoing a rapid expansion in China. As part of this emerging platformization, the industry is reshaping not only the wider socioeconomic ecology, but also the social practices of digital labor. What does a platform mean to delivery workers, and where can we embed their voices into it? Sophie Ping Sun is an Assistant Professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and is currently organizing a project on delivery workers in Beijing. By focusing on three main food-delivery platforms — Meituan, Eleme, and Baidu — Prof Ping Sun wants to explore how platformization affects the livelihood of individual couriers and how their social practices may help support the platform co-op ecosystem.
