Andrew Nyathi, originally from Zimbabwe, has transitioned from a life of struggle for national independence as a guerrilla commander to spearheading cooperative movements in agriculture. An Ashoka Fellow since 1990, he utilizes his experience and credibility in cooperative work to foster sustainable community development. Andrew’s leadership in the uniquely disciplined and independent Simukai cooperative has set a robust example of self-reliance and empowerment. With a focus on practical changes and self-sufficiency, he champions cooperatives as vital instruments for generating jobs, wealth, and education for members. His commitment is not only to revive cooperatives but to innovate and demonstrate their relevance and effectiveness in contemporary Zimbabwe.
