Josie West recently earned her Ph.D. in digital humanities from King’s College London. Her research explores the class dynamics within the online sex industry using workers’ inquiry methodologies. Through co-research techniques, she examines how daily work experiences shape class conflicts and avenues for technological resistance. Josie conducted qualitative fieldwork with the Sex Workers’ Union UK, revealing the exploitative nature of existing adult services platforms and the absence of negotiation power over labor conditions. Her project aims to inform discussions on the decriminalization of ethical pornography consumption and sex work in the UK. She advocates for the integration of Platform Cooperative and Fairwork Principles to establish ethical labor standards. Josie confronts the prevailing carceral approach in the UK’s political landscape, recognizing its adverse impact on marginalized communities.
