Bio

Michelle is a doctoral student in sociology at Northwestern University, researching the impact of technology on the global economy and society. Her current project, funded by the Global Poverty Research Lab, examines how organizations facilitate refugees’ access to the digital labor market. In her upcoming project, she will examine refugee experiences in the platform economy. Michelle has 5 years of experience working in the tech sector and 10+ years of research experience, researching issues related to technology and global governance for organizations such as UNHCR and Bain & Company. She is the founder of Young Tech Leaders of the Middle East, a technology leadership program for refugee youth from the Middle East; and Scientists for Migrant Learning & Education (SMiLE!), an educational initiative that introduces migrant youth to the different sciences. She received her MA in Global Thought from Columbia University and BA in English Language & Literature from the University of Chicago.
