Slam the Pavement!

Slam Laje hosts poetry slams in the Complexo do Alemao favela to promote poetry and works by minoritized writers. Due to the constant violence and marginalization that its residents endure, the favela is a meaningful location for the creation of slam poetry. By occupying various areas of the favela with “passinho,” patterns of rapid foot movements facilitated by sharp twists from the waist, Slam Laje hopes to establish a cultural movement of resistance against the heinous conditions in the favela. Passinho combines breakdancing and funk elements with traditional Brazilian moves—such as samba, frevo, and capoeira—and rhyming battles. Slam laje! (“Slam the pavement!”) is the message coming from their favela. PCC and ITS Rio welcome Slam Laje with pride. May the world be changed by their words.
