Bio

Sumita Chakravarty is associate professor of Media Studies, former chair of Culture and Media at Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts in New York. She is the author of National Identity in Indian Popular Cinema, 1947–1987 (Univ. of Texas Press, 1993); The Enemy Within: The Films of Mrinal Sen (London: Flicks Books, 2000); “Fragmenting the Nation: Images of Terrorism in Indian Popular Cinema” in Terrorism, Media, Liberation (2005); “The Erotics of History: Gender and Transgression in New Asian Cinemas” in Rethinking Third World Cinema (2003). Recent publications include “Cultural Studies Legacies: Visiting James Carey’s Border Country” and essays on media globalization. She is currently working on two book projects: one on technology and the erotic, and the other on media and immigration.
