Gijs van Maanen, MA, Ph.D., serves as an Assistant Professor at Tilburg Law School, specializing in the Ethics, Law, and Policy of New Data Technologies within the Regulating Socio-Technical Change framework. Before embarking on his current path, van Maanen gained practical experience as a postdoctoral researcher at Utrecht University and completed his Ph.D. at Tilburg University, exploring open government and data in the Netherlands. His academic journey is marked by a rich educational background, including cum laude master’s degrees in Philosophy of Political Science and History from Leiden University. Van Maanen’s research interests lie in data commons, collective data governance, and the digital realm’s socio-political dimensions, including civil disobedience and anarchism. He has made significant contributions to understanding data as an economic resource and the regulatory challenges of new technologies. Van Maanen is actively involved in various projects and publications focusing on data commons, governance, and the ethical and political implications of data technologies. His work extends to organizing academic meetings, contributing to workshops, and delivering talks on related themes, underscoring his commitment to advancing the discourse on data ethics and governance in the digital age.
