Hagen Henrÿ, born in 1952 in Germany, completed high school in both Germany and the United States before pursuing studies in law and the French language in Saarbrücken and Geneva. He qualified as a German judge in 1981 and later undertook postgraduate studies focused on development issues and development law in Geneva and Paris. Henrÿ earned his licentiate, doctorate, and professorship in comparative law at the University of Helsinki, serving there until his retirement in late 2020. Prior to his tenure at Helsinki University (2011-2020), he held positions such as Chief of the Cooperative Branch of the ILO, legal advisor to the German Federal Minister of Economy (1983-1991), and academic roles at the universities of Geneva and Saarbrücken (1977-1983). Henrÿ has extensively consulted on cooperative policy and legislation in around 65 countries and remains a pivotal figure in numerous international organizations, including the ILO and the World Bank. Currently, he continues his engagement in the field as a visiting scholar and coordinates the ICA Cooperative Law Committee.
