Bio
Julia Ticona is an assistant professor at the Annenberg School for Communication. Her research explores how digital technologies impact precarious work, focusing on gender, race, and class dynamics. With a qualitative approach, she explores technology’s influence on low-wage workers’ identities and inequalities. Ticona’s previous role as a postdoctoral scholar at the Data & Society Research Institute saw her contribute to a Supreme Court amicus brief. An Associate Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture, she holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Virginia and a B.A. from Wellesley College. Her scholarly work appears in respected journals, and she contributes op-eds to Wired and Slate, among others. Ticona is a recognized media source on digital inequalities, featuring in The New York Times and NPR.
